IAN MARINDA INTERVIEW: Deadly Vision, Hand Spewing Venom
When did your passion for tattooing start? How did you got into it? How long have you been doing this? Back on your early days in the tattoo industry, did you seek apprenticeship from a professional artist or did you learn on your own?
Bale nag start sya noong high school nag do-drawing na ko nun sa balat ko pati sa mga ibang classmate. Then noong nasa art school na ko ina-apply ko na yung mga tattoo elements and stye sa mga artworks ko specially yung traditional style ng tattooing. Sobrang na-aamaze ako sa mga may mga taong may tattoo noon as in sinusundan ko sila kpag may nakakasabay ako maglakad (hehe), Nagtanong ako noon sa prof ko na madaming tattoo (sir auggs fontanilla) about sa mga local artist and shop sabi nya kung sersoyo talaga ako sa tattooing kumuha ako ng apprenticeship. Nabigyan ako ng pag-kakataon manuod kay Wiji Lacsamana sa maikling panahon at noong kaya ko na mag full time nag quit ako sa school at nag apply ako ng apprenticeship sa Dyani Lao Tattoo shop sa Cubao Expo. Almost 3yrs na ko this September sakanya may tinatatpos na lang ako na required amount piece sa client for junior tattoo artist. So far 1yr na ko nakakapag-tattoo sa ibang tao.
Who is your greatest influence?Madami e pero si Thomas Hooper pinaka main influence ko (Tattoo Artist from New York). Sa local sympre mentor ko Dyani Lao, si sir Auggs din sa mga tattoo flash nya and Wesley Valuenzuela for visual art at sympre si Apo Whang Od, sakanya din ako na-inspired mag dotwork grabe yung patience and dedication matapos lang yung piece.
How do you define your style in tattoo designs?
Traditional tattoo ako ngayon nag fofocus kasi andun lahat ng basic aesthetics for tattooing pero minimix ko sya para maging unique and original yung piece dun ko pinapasok yung dotwork (pointillism) and medyo dark images talaga mga gusto ko na subject.
What makes your style unique? / What is the certain detail in your works that one can say “It’s made by Ian Marinda”?
Siguro sa way ng pag shade dotwork yung style, heavy contrast at yung favorite ko na elements na parati makikita sa artwork ko yung demonic eye na hindi ka huhusgahan hehe

Bale Deadly Vision, Hand Spewing Venom yung working title e. Bale about sya sa nakamulatan na paniniwala na pinipilit tayo maging perpekto na nag reresulta tuloy ng pagiging hipokrito sa iba eh ako ikaw lahat ng naman tayo kontaminado sa kasalanan na pinamana sa atin ng nauna.
Most clients have their predetermined idea of what tattoo that they want. On occasions,
when someone gives you an artistic freedom, what inspires your artworks in such instances?
Ayung nga yung purpose ng tattoo flash para sa mga taong walang maisip na design. Pero kung yun nga kung ako mag dedecide siguro ibabase ko sa personality ng client siguro.
Who are the famous personalities that have gotten inked by you?
Wala pa e bago pa lang ako. Saka tingin ko di nila matitripan mga designs ko masisira career nila haha
What are you most proud of about being a tattoo artist? / What is the best thing about this profession?
Sobrang proud sympre natupad yung dream job mo di mo nararamdaman yung pagod at sobrang enjoy ng process parang naglalaro lang. Saka most important yung connection mo between your client forever na sya dadahin nya yung piece mo hanggang sa pagtanda, kahit mawala sya sa mundo dala dala pa din nya yung piyesa mo ayun yung part na sobrang sacred para sakin forever partnership with two people. Saka dapat perfect lahat walang lugar ng pagkakamali kaya para sakin tattoo is the purest form of art.
