On Being a Sneakerhead

Monday 06.13.11 09:53 AM

It’s a given that most of us are packrats, we dont hide away memorabilia and event fossils for any reason that we love to remember the era that they come with. The same logic goes for being a sneaker collector. Acting on gut feel, rekindling that moment when you first rocked your most cherished Nike sneakers to school, you saw the guy in Megadeth rock the white Jordan VI’s, you hear RUN-DMC on your iPod and you somehow remember those white Superstar Adidas joints? It’s quite unavoidable. And now that you’ve got some money to spare and you want to feel like a kid again, you play catch-up with time and you drag yourself to the mall, or max out your credit card… it’s a beautiful thing!

Also, it’s like collecting pieces of art, icons and fashion fixtures that send ‘heads to breathless moments of bliss. Nothing beats that feeling of taking home a box of goodies and finding a nice shirt to match it with the next day. Collecting is fun but sometimes, I mean sometimes you have to bust them out once in a while, unless you want them to gather dust or worse, become a piece of plastic crumbling to dust… that’s a nightmare! Not to mention, you’ve spent a lot of cash for it. As long as we’re not coming back in time to be barefoot, sneakers will always be a part of this sub-culture. For others, that pair you’re wearing is “just a shoe”, for you, it defines who you are. It gives people on the streets a glimpse of what you’ve been through, what you know and what you aspire to be. The next time you see a friend, shake his hand, then look down. You can tell a lot about him- because the shoes say it all.

And oh, have you seen our latest Daily Grind collection for SM? Well, you really should check the shirts out, because you can match any of them with your favorite kicks! Have a great week ahead!

Here’s DJ AM (RIP) with his prized collection… wow!
